Are you looking for something fun to do next summer? Do you love textiles, dyeing and quilts?

If so, Wacky Jacky has the perfect vacation for you: A 12-day Indigo Shibori dyeing retreat! From July 10 to 21, 2023, be prepared to have a dream vacation with like-minded ladies that have the same interests as you. An amazing opportunity to make lifelong friends, delightful memories, and beautiful shibori pieces.

What is the meaning of shibori in Wacky Jacky's retreats?

Shibori is a dyeing technique that originally originated in Japan. Essentially, Shibori involves tying the fabric using thread to create eccentric patterns by exposing only some portions before dyeing. Each person has the ability to create their own personalised, unique result, which makes this technique extra special.

The retreat lasts for 12 days and offers an opportunity for people to learn this unique and special technique from the experts themselves, our favourite couple, Shuji and Alison Yamazaki from Wabi Sabi. They will reveal the tying and clumping dyeing methods and teach you how to wrap and stitch Shibori methods.

Wabi Sabi is a traditional Japanese aesthetic term that refers to the pursuit of peace and beauty in the midst of life's natural imperfections — the beauty itself is found in the imperfect and unique. All PFD (prepared for fabric dyeing) cotton and linen will be supplied and you will stitch, wrap, clump and tie your PFD to make the most amazing designs.

Wabi Sabi

Alison and Shuji Yamazaki from Wabi Sabi will tutor you along the way.

If you're looking for the best of the best when it comes to Shibori dyeing, look no further than Shuji and Alison. These two experts have been perfecting their craft for over 25 years, and they love sharing their knowledge and joy of Japanese dyeing with others. They are originally based in Canberra but will be joining us on the retreat !

During the retreat, Shuji and his wife, Alison, will teach you about different traditional Shibori tying, clumping, and dyeing techniques. You will also have the opportunity to practice these techniques yourself or even let your imagination run wild to create your own technique. There are no limits to your creativity!

Indigo dyed from Balinese indigo

That is not all. You will get the opportunity to extract your own blue indigo dye from Balinese indigo flowers.

You will then use this dye to create beautiful patterns on fabric through traditional Balinese Batik fabric techniques taught by friendly locals and masters of the art. We guarantee you will not find an experience of both Balinese and Japanese workshops anywhere else.

You will be creating 40x10 inch blocks with the Shibori dyeing technique before Pauline Rogers, quilting expert, takes over to guide you in sewing your blocks together to create a wonderful finalized Shibori queen size quilt to take home.
